• Both are good to keep out animals, control Oder, and protect your compost from being exposed to the elements.  When rain washes over your open compost pile you loose valuable nutrients, such as nitrogen, carbon, potassium, & phosphorus. 
• Adding a variety of garden debris is important to make sure your compost has these key elements.   Green material helps to add nitrogen.  Grass clippings, hay, vegetable & fruit throw outs, left over crops from your garden and manure are all good nitrogen ingredients the composting process.   To add carbon elements use dry straw, sawdust, paper, cardboard, & wood chips.
