- Worm composting can be done year round.
- Control the moisture content of you worm composter's mixture. Don't let your worms dry out or drown. Worms need moisture, but they also need to breathe
- Avoid Animal & Animal Bi-Products. Use fruits, vegetables, & other vegetation
- Keep a good ratio of carbon to nitrogen (c:n). Recommend a 30:1 ratio of carbon to nitrogen for worm composting
- Harvest your worm compost regularly to promote aeration. Oxygen is vital to the worms and to the decomposition of the waste
Suggested Ingredients for Your Worm Compost
- Add Brown ingredients which are high in carbon. Shredded newspaper, cardboard, junk mail ( avoiding colored ink due to toxins), dead crumbled leaves, sawdust, coir, or hay
- Add Green ingredients which are high in nitrogen. Vegetable & fruit scraps, veggie/fruit peels, coffee grounds, tea bags.
- Add egg shells when you compost mixture becomes too acidic
