Let the Worms Eat Your Garbage ... You Feed Your Garden

Worm compost, also known as Vermicompost, vermicast, or worm castings, is the results of organic matter being broken down by various types of worms.  The result is nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that feeds and conditions garden soil and nurtures your plants.

Why is Worm Compost Preferred by Gardeners

  • Yields higher grade compost than traditional compost methods
  • Excellent fertilizer for garden beds, shrubs, & container plants
  • Eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers
  • Multiple Uses - leave the worm castings on top of the soil to dress flower beds & plants, or mix in to fortify & texturize your soil
  • Seeds germinate quicker, plants grow faster, produces more blooms on flowering plants & strengthens plant's root system
  • Takes less worm compost than normal compost.  Richer in nutrients so you use less
  • Overall, Healthier Plants Result from the Use of Worm Compost

Important Factors to keep in Mind

  • Be aware of the temperature of your worm composting material.   Worms thrive in 55-75 degrees F.  No higher than 85 degrees F. and no lower than 32 degrees F.
  • Avoid placing you worm composter in the sunlight during hot months.  Place in the shade & easy to bring indoors to your garage or basement doing winter months.
  • Worm composting can be done year round.
  • Control the moisture content of you worm composter's mixture.  Don't let your worms dry out or drown.  Worms need moisture, but they also need to breathe
  • Avoid Animal & Animal Bi-Products.  Use fruits, vegetables, & other vegetation
  • Keep a good ratio of carbon to nitrogen (c:n).  Recommend a 30:1 ratio of carbon to nitrogen for worm composting
  • Harvest your worm compost regularly to promote aeration.  Oxygen is vital to the worms and to the decomposition of the waste

Suggested Ingredients for Your Worm Compost

  • Add Brown ingredients which are high in carbon. Shredded newspaper, cardboard, junk mail ( avoiding colored ink due to toxins), dead crumbled leaves, sawdust, coir, or hay
  • Add Green  ingredients which are high in nitrogen.  Vegetable & fruit scraps, veggie/fruit peels, coffee grounds, tea bags.
  • Add egg shells when you compost mixture becomes too acidic
